Different Types of Dmx Controller

DMX-512 is the latest version of the standard. There are many different kinds of DMX controllers available today. Some of these include DMX receivers, DMX repeaters, DMX switchers, DMX servers, DMX power supplies, etc. Let’s take a closer look at each type of DMX controller.

DMX Receiver

The main function of a receiver is to receive DMX signals from other devices and convert them into usable data format. Receivers are typically installed near the source of the signal so that they can be connected directly to the lighting fixtures. If there is no direct connection between the fixture and the receiver, the receiver needs to be placed somewhere else where the signal strength is strong enough to reach it. For example, a receiver could be mounted inside a ceiling box or hung above the stage floor. Most DMX receivers support both analog and digital inputs. Analog input supports only single color channels while digital input supports multiple colors. Digital input is more flexible because it can be programmed to send specific commands to individual fixtures. However, it takes longer to set up compared to using analog input.

DMX Repeater

Repeaters are basically amplifiers that repeat the same signal received from another device. Repeaters are commonly used to extend the range of a particular channel. For instance, if you have two fixtures controlled by a master dimmer switch, you might want to connect those fixtures together via a repeater. That way, you can turn down the brightness level of one fixture while turning up the brightness level of the second fixture. Another common use of repeaters is to increase the number of fixtures that can be controlled by a given DMX transmitter. For example, if you have a group of eight fixtures, you can connect them together using four repeaters. Each repeater receives the same command from the transmitter and sends it to the next repeater. Thus, the last repeater gets the final output of the entire chain. Repeaters are very useful for extending the distance between a transmitter and a receiver. But remember that repeaters amplify the noise too! So, if you plan to use a repeater, choose a quiet location away from noisy sources such as air conditioners, fans, etc.

DMX Switcher

Switches are essentially relays that route DMX signals based on certain criteria. Like repeaters, switches are also used to extend the range of a DMX network. Unlike repeaters, however, switches are designed to handle large amounts of traffic. Therefore, they are generally used to connect several DMX transmitters to a single receiver. Switches are also known as “hubswitches” because they act as hubs connecting DMX networks. Hubswitches are especially popular among event producers who need to create complex lighting schemes. For example, a hubswitch can be used to connect three separate DMX networks to a single receiver.
